3rd Michigan Reorganized Buried at the Michigan Veterans Home

The reorganized 3rd Michigan Infantry was a completely separate unit from the original (or "old") 3rd Michigan. The former served from 1864-1866 in the western theater of the war.  For more information on the reorganized 3rd Michigan go here.

The Old 3rd served with the Army of the Potomac mainly in Virginia from 1861-1864.

Michigan Veterans' Home Cemetery Grand Rapids

The Michigan Veterans' Home (also known as the Michigan Soldiers' Home) Cemetery in Grand Rapids has two entrances:  the "old" entrance off of Monroe which is quietly marked and the main one which is accessed from the grounds of the Home itself (and there is visitor parking nearby).  

The entrance off Monroe shown below allows access to the Marine Iraqi memorial to five men who were killed in 2006-2007.

The cemetery layout is straightforward and easy to navigate laid out by plot (numbers 1-7) and then row and finally grave number (from left to right along the row.

There is a map board at the entrance from inside the grounds (across the bridge over the pond). There is no map at the Monroe Street entrance. Feel free to download this one:

St Patrick's Cemetery Wallingford, Vermont 2025

 We returned to St. Patricks in Julys of 2025 looking for the grave of Lena P. Drzewiczewski, a dear friend and colleague of Susan's. And we found her.

Located just off Rte 7 above Green Hill Cemetery in Wallingford, Vermont. Turn east on Church street, drive uphill a short distance and look for the sign on the right.

Cave Hill Cemetery

Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky is unique in that it combines a local cemetery with a national cemetery component. I was there to find Moses P. Bigelow who once served in the 3rd Michigan Infantry but was discharged in 1862 for "insanity." He eventually returned to Michigan and reentered the army in the 17th Michigan  Cavalry and die of lung disease in 1864 at a hospital in Louisville.

The cemetery -- not the national part -- is also the final resting place of Muhammed Ali.
