Civil War Veterans in Fulton Cemetery block 7

Block 07 consists of at least 10 veterans of the Civil War.  Qith the exception of Francis Kellogg and the cenotaph of Benjamin Church nearly  all  began the war in the 3rd Michigan Infantry.

Lot 5. Captain Samuel Judd of Company A 3rd Michigan Infantry was killed in action at Fair Oaks, VA on 31 May 1862, his body was returned to Grand Rapids for burial.

Lot 6. Captain Benjamin Porter of Company B 8th Michigan Infantry. Also a memorial to Captain Benjamin Church of Company D 8th Michigan Infantry. He was killed in action at James Island, SC,  and his grave location is unknown.

Lot 8. Major Peter Weber enlisted first in the 3rd Michigan Infantry at the start of the war and was subsequently transferred to the Michigan 6th Cavalry. He was killed in action at Falling Waters, MD. Like Judd his body was returned to Grand Rapids for burial.

Lot 9. Colonel Francois Kellogg. A congressman from Grand Rapids he was instrumental in the creating and organizing several cavalry regiments in the city.

Lot 10. Lieutenant Charles Cary and his brother-in-law Quartermaster Robert Collins both served in the 3rd Michigan Infantry. Charles was eventually transferred to U.S. Signals Corps and died of disease in Mississippi in 1863. His remains were returned to Grand Rapids. Robert was transferred to the regular army as commissary of subsistence and survived the war and died in 1872.

Lot 23. Lieutenant Peter Bogardus of Company F 3rd Michigan Infantry. He was discharged for disability in 1863. Not long after he returned home he died while in Saginaw, MI and his remains were returned to Grand Rapids for interment.

Lot 25. Albert Babcock served as a hospital steward in the 3rd Michigan Infantry.

Authorized in 1885 by the state legislature, the Michigan Veterans Home opened in early 1886.

There is a map board at the entrance from inside the grounds and located across the bridge over the pond. There is no map at the Monroe Street entrance. 

The cemetery layout is pretty straightforward seven sections (plots) laid out in rows numbered west to east and then graves numbered north to south.

Mary Sparling Dart's husband John Dart served in Company B. It appears he and Mary were estranged for many years. John died in 1903 and is buried in Blue Mound Cemetery, Milford, Nebraska.

James Reynolds of Company D presents an a bit of a mystery. He died at the Home in 1914 and is buried in the Home Cemetery both Home records and death certificate confirms this. However, there is a government headstone for him in Carson City Cemetery, Montcalm County. Online records for that cemetery intimate that he was "reburied" in 1886. The government's online records for veterans headstones notes the stone was acquired c. 1900. 

Also of note is that his second wife Phoebe Armstrong Stevens is buried in the Home cemetery as well: 5-9-7 (under the name of Stevens); the marker lists her date of death as May 2, 1918; it was May 2, 1919.
