Tucked into a hillside overlooking Shawme Pond, at the edge of Old Sandwich is, unsurprisingly, the "Old Town Cemetery." Just a stone's throw (if you have a good arm) from Heritage Museums and Gardens, stopping and strolling among the lives of many of the original settlers of this corner of Cape Cod is not only refreshing but a rewarding experience as well.

Discovered my ancestors are buried there- three of the five oldest burials plus maybe the oldest original headstone, Ezra Perry, 1689, his 'in-laws' burial was earlier but their original headstones were replaced 100 years ago. I was surprised at how small his headstone and that of his wife were when we visited.
When we first got there an older disabled man was pulling a red wagon with a toy sailboat into the cemetery. He launched it attached by a thin rope and sailed it for a while as we started to look for where their headstones would be. Kind of special finally seeing them in person- what a beautiful setting! We were there in October, 2012, on a very nice fall day. So quiet and peaceful. We walked the cemetery looking at other headstones as well. In fact I did a video of my wife reading the 'headstone' of Titus Winchester, a former slave, a remarkable man. I put headstone in brackets in that his lies flat rather than upright and contains the longest text I've ever seen on a headstone- The entire series of photos is at https://flic.kr/s/aHsjBbCms9
