Love, Truth and Honor
attended all his steps, and dwelt
ever in his heart:
Knowledge was the end he aimed at,
and Science the familiar companion
of his thought.
He loved first his wife and children,
next his country,
then the whole world of man,
and last and least of all himself.
His widow's sorrows
have sanctified this humble monument,
and his children's tears have bedewed it
and thus it is a shrine
sacred to Affection, Memory and Hope.
